Chihuahuas are among the smallest dog breeds the world. They come in teacup variations and toy variations in which they are bred to be smaller than your average Chihuahua. Because of their size, they are sought by many city dwellers and women as pets. They are small enough to be able to live comfortably in a small city apartment and can be carried around in a small bag.
Getting Chihuahua Puppies
Most people get their pets from pet stores. Although some pet stores may be reputable, not all are trustworthy enough to sell properly bred dogs and cats. Some have connections to puppy mills where dogs are bred indiscriminately and inhumanely. It is better to contact a certified breeder to be sure you get Chihuahua puppies which are usually bred out of the common gene pool. Most puppy mills interbreed their adult dogs from close relatives which may result in recessive genes and internal deformities.
When you bring home a Chihuahua puppy make sure that you handle it well. It is smaller than the average dogs and needs to feel secure when being carried. Chihuahua puppies might tempt you to cuddle them when it is time to sleep because of their fragile, tiny looks. Bear in mind that once you start bringing the puppy to bed you may have a hard time breaking it out of this concept.
Leave it in the kitchen or where there is a warm place for it to stay. You can supply a small bed for it in a small box. It is better t o put it in the box initially to let it know that that is its bed.
Make sure that the water dish is heavy and have a wider base to avoid spills. It should not be deep enough for Chihuahua puppies to fall into. Dogs need lots of water especially if they move around a lot. Chihuahua puppies are susceptible to cold and extreme heat. Make sure that they stay in a well regulated area. It is also a good idea to let visitors to your home know that there is a small puppy in the house. Chihuahua puppies are small and sometimes may move around a lot and they might get stepped on.
Ask the pet store or breeder where you got the Chihuahua puppies from what food they are accustomed to. Drastic changes in their diet may affect the Chihuahua puppies and cause an upset stomach.
