Pomeranian Dogs
Listed as a member of the Toy dog breed, the Pomeranian dogs are but a lovely breed that originates from Germany. It was developed from the sled dogs of Iceland and Lapland which were later introduced into Pomerania in Europe, where it takes its name. In Pomerania, the Pomeranian dogs were noted and valued not just as a family pet, but also as a working dog.
How the Pomeranian Dogs Look Like?
The Pomeranian dogs stand at an average of 3 to 7 pounds based on the standards set by AKC. With this size, the Pomeranian is considered throughout Germany and the rest of Europe and the world as the smallest breed that belongs to the northern breed type. Well, it is due to this size that the Pomeranians are classed as a Toy dog.
Physically, the Pomeranian dogs look like a fox. Its face is wedge shaped, with ears that are small, thin and set high. It also has a tail that is usually carried flat over its back. Aside from that, the Pomeranians are noted for its hairy coat. It is double coated, with the undercoat being so soft, fluffy and thick, and with the top coat being straight, coarse and long. The coat of the Pomeranian dogs comes in color combinations black, blue, tan, chocolate, cream, sable, orange, and red. Some also come in parti-color, but the most common shades noted for it are chocolate sable, white, brindle, wolf sable, and beaver. These color variation is actually one of the factors that make the Pomeranian dogs worth the look.
Character and Temperament
The Pomeranian dogs are an active breed that responds immediately to a proper call. They are often described as lively, intelligent and playful. They are friendly and get along well with both adults and kids, as well as with the other dog breeds and animals. Apart from that, the Pomeranians are the type that often seeks attention and affection from their masters. They love to be cuddled and just like some of the dog breeds, the Pomeranian dogs are so curious and inquisitive. While these attributes can make the Pomeranians perfect inside a home, they can also make a good watchdog for their bark in cases of intrusions.
Grooming Tips
With its long and silky hairs, the Pomeranian dogs are easy to groom. Their hairs can be clipped if needed, but should be brushed or combed regularly. This regular grooming is needed to keep its coat, which sheds seasonally, in good condition. Aside from that, the teeth and ears of the Pomeranian dogs should be cleaned regularly, but excessive bathing is not recommended for that can damage their coat and skin. And, since teeth problems are so common for this breed, the Pomeranians should be brought to a veterinary expert for dental care at least once a week. It would also be ideal if you’ll brush their teeth on a daily basis.
